Visit of the Horb Viaduct

The Horb High Bridge is part of the Horb bypass, designed to divert through-traffic on Federal Highway 32 around the town of Horb. Currently under construction since 2023, the bridge will span 667 meters and reach a height of up to 70 meters above ground level. The pylon height of this extradosed bridge will be 90 meters. The bridge spans the Neckar Valley, although the Neckar River itself is only 15 meters wide at this location. The project is currently one of the largest infrastructure undertakings in Baden-Württemberg. Commissioning is scheduled for 2028.

The tour will be led by representatives from the engineering firm Leonhardt, Andrä und Partner Beratende Ingenieure VBI AG and the company röro, responsible for the launching gantry.

Visit of Stuttgart 21 underground station

Meeting point and time: reception area of the InfoTurmStuttgart (ITS) at Platform 16 within Stuttgart Central Station, time tbd

Stuttgart 21 is a transport and urban development project aimed at reorganizing the Stuttgart railway hub. The project involves the construction of eleven new – predominantly underground – railway lines (totaling 57 km) and four new stations, including a new central station, which will be the destination of this excursion. The new underground station will replace the existing 17-track terminus with an 8-track through-station. This new underground facility will free up approximately one square kilometer of current or former track area on the edge of Stuttgart’s city center for urban development.

The meeting point is the reception area of the InfoTurmStuttgart (ITS) at Platform 16 within Stuttgart Central Station. We will receive an introduction to the overall Stuttgart-Ulm Rail Project at the InfoTurmStuttgart exhibition. Afterward, we will put on personal protective equipment and tour the construction site surrounding Stuttgart Central Station.

You are free to bring your own helmet or vest.

Please do not bring any luggage to the construction site. Please store your luggage in a secure location, such as the hotel or public lockers, as we do not have space for it during the technical walks.

Keynote Speaker - Dr. Roman Geier

Roman Geier was born in 1974 and, after graduating from a higher technical college, completed his studies in civil engineering (Dipl.-Ing.) in 1998. He then began his career at a large Austrian engineering consultant, while simultaneously completing a doctoral degree in structural monitoring at the Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien) in 2004. Since 2005, Roman Geier has been employed at Schimetta Consult ZT GmbH, an Austrian engineering consultant with approximately 100 employees and a portfolio focused on the planning and construction supervision of transportation infrastructure projects. As managing partner, he is responsible for the departments of transportation systems, construction management, and monitoring.

Roman Geier has been an IABSE member since 1999 and has held various positions within the organization. In the past, in addition to chairing WC2 Steel, Timber & Composite Structures, he also chaired Young Engineers, a key role within IABSE. Since 2018, Roman Geier has focused on the IABSE Foundation, which he chaired from 2022 to 2026
